About the Society

The Society for Free Tax Assistance grew out of nearly two decades of hands-on work supporting VITA, LITC, and TCE programs — as a program manager, technical assistance provider, and advisor to national financial empowerment initiatives. I originally established the VITAquality.org website as a place for Barbara DelBene and me to share tax preparation advice with VITA sites. We both went on to establish the Taxpayer Opportunity Network at CFED, now Prosperity Now. Barbara has since passed away, and I started my nonprofit consulting firm.

However, I never stopped helping free tax assistance providers and helping them connect with practitioners who share their interests. What started as informal support for individual sites has grown into a broader effort to connect programs, share what works, and help free tax assistance reach more people who need it. We work with site coordinators, volunteers, and partner organizations across states to strengthen program quality, share best practices, and track where free tax help is available—and where it’s needed most. The Society is not currently an independent organization but a project of JC Craig Consulting.

About JC Craig

JC Craig is a nationally recognized nonprofit program, leadership, and management consultant. Over the past 18 years, he has provided technical assistance to nonprofit organizations nationwide, drawing on firsthand experience managing successful programs in Illinois and Washington, D.C.

He has built and sustained local, state, and national coalitions focused on financial empowerment. He has served as a bridge between community-based organizations and federal agencies—notably as a member of the IRS Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee, where he focused on protecting consumers from identity theft and cybercrime. Since 2016, JC has served as a senior technical assistance provider for multiple financial empowerment initiatives of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and has consulted under contracts with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, NeighborWorks America, and community-based organizations across the country.
